The Bur Oak on the ancestral Hoover farm was tested, and found to be over 250 years old. Residents adamantly resisted the felling of the tree until it was struck by lightning in 1998, which severly damaged it. In like fashion, an ancient elm tree in the middle of Market Ave at 55th St. was actually paved around until its decline called for its removal in 1916.
